Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
Autism is a complex neurobehavioral disorder characterized by impairment in reciprocal social interaction, impairment in communication, and the presence of repetitive and stereotypic patterns of behaviors, interests, and activities. The onset of symptoms is typically before the age of 3 years. The severity of impairment in the given domains as well as the pattern of impairments varies from individual to individual; that is why diagnosticians refer to a “spectrum” of disability.
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
There are three types of ADHD:
1. Predominantly Inattentive, which is categorized by the child having trouble organizing or staying on task, paying attention to detail, or following instructions or conversations. They are often easily distracted.
2. Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive, where the child fidgets and talks a lot, has difficulty sitting still, is constantly moving, feels restless, and struggles with impulsivity, such as interrupting, grabbing things from people, speaking at inappropriate times, or exhibiting an inability to wait his or her turn.
3. Combined Presentation, which shares symptoms of the first two types equally.
Oppositional Defiance Disorder (ODD)
A disorder in a child marked by defiant and disobedient behavior to authority figures.
The cause of oppositional defiant disorder is unknown but likely involves a combination of genetic and environmental factors.
Intellectual disability (ID)
Once called mental retardation, is characterized by below-average intelligence or mental ability and a lack of skills necessary for day-to-day living. People with intellectual disabilities can and do learn new skills, but they learn them more slowly.
